Government investigates possible price-fixing by egg and tomato industries

The U.S. Justice Department has opened investigations of possible price-fixing by the egg and tomato industries, according to an article in the Sept. 23 Wall Street Journal.

Federal agencies are making criminal or civil inquiries in several markets including fertilizer, cheese and milk, looking into whether suppliers worked in concert to manipulate prices, the paper says.

Golden Oval Foods, Michael Foods, and MoArk have confirmed that they have received subpoenas sent by the U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia, the Journal says. Golden Oval and MoArk say they are cooperating with the inquiry, and a Michael Foods executive says his company is responding to the government’s request.
