HSUS invokes religion in anti-cage campaign

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) website, the organization will initiate a religious theme campaign in October targeting caged housing of hens.

Their website directs viewers to professional videos presenting non-contextual statements by Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious authorities and purports to buttress the HSUS opposition to caged hens. The organization is asking adherents to pledge to consume eggs only from non-caged hens.

An affiliate of HSUS, Humane Farm Animal Care Inc., which is responsible for the “Certified Humane” program and logo receives a check-off fee for cage-free eggs produced by subscribing companies. A significant following of HSUS as confirmed by a large volume of pledges could benefit the “Certified Humane” image in their competition with the American Humane Society certification program, which has recently attained reciprocity with the United Egg Producers.
