No rebound yet in layer numbers

On March 1, table egg type layers were 2 percent below year-earlier levels, according to USDA’s latest Chicken and Eggs report.

Producers have not yet geared up production, despite continued strong egg prices.

Looking at the top-10 egg producing states in flocks 30,000 and above during February, production was up 4 percent in Iowa, the nation’s No. 1 egg producing state, but down in the other nine. State by state, layers were down 7 percent in Ohio; 3 percent in Indiana; 7 percent in Pennsylvania; 2 percent in California; 5 percent in Texas; 4 percent in Florida; 11 percent in Nebraska; 8 percent in Minnesota; and down 5 percent in Georgia.
