Vancouver suburb goes cage-free in city facilities

An estimated 98 percent of Canada’s layers are kept in battery cages.

Richmond, B.C., population 185,400, barred eggs from caged hens in all city-run facilities late last month, becoming the first city in North America to do so. The Richmond City Council also urged citizens, including restaurants, caterers, retailers, and wholesalers, to only sell certified organic free-range eggs, according to an article in the Vancouver Sun. Richmond is a suburb of Vancouver, B.C.
