Six states could ban caged production

Bills would end egg production in cages in six states and would prevent state buyers from purchasing eggs produced in cages in three of those states.

The language of legislative bills introduced in New Hampshire, Connecticut, Arizona, Washington, Vermont, and California could eliminate cage egg production if passed, according to the United Egg Producers. Most of the individual state bills have similar wording.

The New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut legislation also would prohibit the state departments, offices, institutions, and other agencies of the states—include public schools—from purchasing eggs produced in cages.

There is no cage production business in New Hampshire that UEP is aware of and very little in Vermont. Connecticut, Arizona, Washington, and California have several million hens in cage production.
