The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended by 60 days the public comment period on its sanitary transportation rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act.

The FDA said it approved an extension to the comment period as a result of requests from several groups, including the National Grain and Feed Association and National Oilseed Processors Association.

The FDA held three public meetings on the rule in February and March; transcripts can be accessed on the FDA website.

The proposed rule would require entities that transport food by motor or rail vehicles to take steps to prevent contamination of human and animal food during transport, and establish criteria for sanitary transportation practices, along with other measures.

The proposal is the seventh major rule outlined under the FDA’s landmark food safety overhaul aimed at preventing foodborne illnesses.
