The Agriculture Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a $25 million reduction in the annual budget, completely eliminating funding for new buildings or facilities.

This has impacted the expansion of the Southeastern Research Poultry Laboratory in Athens, Ga., which hopefully was to become the National Poultry Disease Research Center.

In addition, $6 million accruing to the construction account for this facility over the past few years was redirected to other projects.

According to authoritative sources, upwards of $40 million assigned by Congress to agricultural research has been diverted to development of value-added farm product and environmental projects.
