Italian meat and egg association UnaItalia, which represents the majority of the poultry companies in Italy, has joined the International Egg Commission (IEC).

On jointing the association, UnaItalia’s president, Aldo Muraro, commented: “Our association already plays an important role in international meat institutions, such as the International Poultry Council and the Association of Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade in the EU. With this new membership, UnaItalia will participate in the leading global association for the egg industry, continuing to strengthen the position of the Italian egg sector, at home and overseas.”

Italy’s entry into the IEC brings its membership to 81.

Egg production in Italy stood at 12,168 million last year, a decrease of 2.14 percent. This contraction was due to producers having to adapt their production to EU welfare legislation, UnaItalia notes, and the sector remained under pressure through 2014. 2013 saw egg imports rising by 145 percent. Exports of eggs also rose last year, up by 271 percent.
