India launches poultry development scheme

The plan aims to strengthen existing state poultry farms.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the implementation of the centrally-sponsored Poultry Development Scheme from the third year of XI Five Year Plan -- 2009-2010 -- at an outlay of $31 million (Rs.150 crore), according to a report.

The plan is designed to strengthen existing state poultry farms so they can provide improved stocks suitable for rural backyard rearing. The Rural Backyard Poultry Development component is to help people below the poverty line gain supplementary income and nutritional support.

The Poultry Estates component will establish two estates where educated, unemployed youth and small farm owners can learn the various aspects in making a poultry venture profitable.
