French livestock trade show SPACE has been running its innovation awards, Innov’Space, since 1995. This year, 166 submissions across species and activities were received for consideration by an independent panel of experts.

Innov’Space prize winners are divided into two categories and awarded either one star or two stars based in the level of value for farmers or end users. Of the 49 products recognized by the jury this year nine were exclusively for poultry and one poultry product received the highest accolade – three stars.

Three Stars

The only product exclusively for use in poultry production to be recognized with three stars this year was the Laser Life  egg candler from ECAT.

The company notes that Laser Life combines two complementary technologies to candle eggs, and allows the accurate identification of various types of egg, particularly unfertile eggs, after incubation, along with early and late dead embryos, rotten eggs and live embryos.

It is particularly valuable for identifying clear eggs, reducing waste, and raising the quality of in-ovo vaccination, particularly when using the ECAT Egginject. Additionally, Laser Life contributes to improved hatched chick quality.

Laser Life can detect incubated upside down eggs with 100 percent accuracy, and leads to improved hatching. By detecting eggs without touching them, it prevents contamination and shell cracks. The candler uses the accuracy of a laser beam to analyses the volume of an egg, and gives a differentiated description of its content. This allows different egg types, particularly dead eggs, to be separated and waste controlled.

Two Stars

The Auto Confort Nest  from Orvia Gourmand Selection was awarded two stars. It is the next generation nest for waterfowl, the company notes, and a welfare innovation.

The nest allows birds to be reared and reproduce in natural conditions, respecting laying space, ensuring traceability, and improving analysis and genetic selection.

Each nest is equipped with a double door and with a movement sensor. When a female duck enters the nest the door closes behind it.  A push of the door is all that is needed to opens it.  An electronic tag attached to the duck’s leg alerts a receiver under the nest so enabling the association of the laid egg to the corresponding duck and ensuring traceability.

The BioStreamer Re-Store  incubator from Petersime was also recognized with a two star award.

The company explains that, the longer eggs are stored, the greater the reduction in hatchability. In the egg holding room, eggs are kept at, or under, a so-called threshold temperature or physiological zero for development. However, partial, but not global or proportionate, development can take place at these sub-threshold temperatures.

Different cells or tissues in these early embryos may have different threshold temperatures for development, resulting in uneven or disproportionate development. If this disproportionate development progresses too far, it may interfere with embryonic viability and hence hatchability. Periodic warming during prolonged storage allows the embryo to redress disproportionate developments and ensures the required degree of embryonic development for all tissues in a proportional way.

BioStreamer Re-Store is equipped with more heating capacity than any setter of the same size. It ensures swift and controlled heating of the stored eggs. The incubator also has an increased number and diameter of cooling coils. As a result, the eggs can be cooled gradually to a temperature level that allows placing the eggs back in the egg holding room without disturbing the temperature there.

The Stunner VE  is an electrostunning device compliant with the latest standards for poultry slaughter. Its manufacturer FAF note that it is small and simple to use and can be applied across bird species, as well as for rabbits, prior to slaughter. This is the new version of the company’s previous stunner. The cover has been completely redesigned and is now more waterproof. The circuit board has a chip that monitors a bird’s impedance. The device is equipped with a display for ease of operator use and which shows the intensity of current delivered during stunning. Stunner VE is suitable for small and larger scale operations.

One Star

Cargill’s poultry feed additive Aloapur  was awarded one star. Provimi, part of Cargill Group, developed the additive and it is based, on the one hand on the action of the intestinal flora thanks to the properties of a patented natural ingredient (lactylates) and, on the other, on rapid diagnosis conducted during breeding. This analysis can be carried out by farmers using a sample of feces and infrared analysis of its components.

In vitro results show that the lactylates in Aloapur are able to bring about a controlled change in the gastrointestinal microflora. Lactylates are slowly metabolized in the broiler’s digestive tract. In the distal region of the intestine, the remaining level of lactylates is still sufficient to induce a difference in animal performance.

Associated with this feed solution, Provimi has developed a method to collect and analyze feces. The fast infrared analysis details the composition of water, starch, protein and phosphorous resulting in a profile that can be used to track breeding.

Ceva Sante Animale’s Desvac In Line Sprayer, an automatic sprayer giving a flat spay for DOC vaccination in hatchery, also received one star. Specially developed for large volumes, it has flat nozzle technology which applies, non-stop, a homogeneous spray pattern with constant droplet size and crate coverage.

Unique to the product are its flat spray design for perfect coverage, and that it is free standing and adaptable to any conveyor belt system, meaning that there is no need for modifying current conveyor systems during installation.

Additionally, crates are not paused for spraying which saves time; there is an alarm system for blocked crates and an empty vaccine tank; a tactile screen for easy and user friendly settings; and data can be downloaded on a USB device for traceability, It also benefits from a Clean In Place system for better hygiene; an accurate dosing unit from 5-22 ml; and, an integrated vaccine shaker system.

The Fantura  air inlet from Fancom was also recognized with the award of one star. Fancom notes that tests have shown that an air stream of at least 2.5 cm is needed to properly control ventilation. The inertia of an air stream smaller than 2.5 cms is insufficient to provide significant throw. Fancom has, therefore, developed the Fantura, a new design of inlet that is able to control the ventilation for a poultry house down to 1 percent (30m3h/unit).

The vent is a single unit without any special accessories or mechanisms. In winter, all vents remain operational - unlike current systems which require some of the vents to be closed off or a sophisticated control system has to stagger the vent opening. This vent must be used with a Fancom intelligent actuator which has been designed to provide linear control of the air flow. The system ensures that farmers no longer have difficulty in controlling the vents in winter, animals have better conditions, better bedding and no draughts. The system also reduces heating costs.

The Rest Table  from ACMA was similarly recognized. The table was designed to encourage poultry, and in particular fattened ducks, to relax and not struggle on the way to the water bath. It is made from stainless steel and can be placed under the overhead conveyor at the point immediately after where birds are hung on the shackles The table is fully adjustable to ensure that it comes into contact with the bird’s thorax. It is small, easy to install and can be adapted to existing processing lines, the manufacturers say.

The Star’System  feed trolley was also recognized with a one star award in this year’s innovation awards. Manufacturer Mixscience points out that achieving good performance on the poultry farm is dependent on a good starter phase. Farmers not only have to prepare the building that will receive the chicks, but they must also make sure that the chicks can easily reach a highly digestible, moist feed. Ensuring success during the first few days that chicks are on farm  is a significant amount of woark for the farmer. This single trolley, to distribute paper, starter feed and a nutritional solution to encourage food consumptions simplifies the task for farmers as well as ensuring that broiler get a good start.
