Russian poultry production up 13% in first quarter

Russia increased its poultry production by 86,000 metric tons, or by 13%, in the first quarter of this year as compared with the same period in 2008, according to the Interfax news agency.

Russia's Agriculture Minister, Yelena Skrynnik, told a meeting on meat production in Rostov in early April that the share held by imports in total poultry consumption in Russia was 36.2%. She called for a lowering of this figure. Skrynnik added that the share held by poultry in total Russian meat consumption rose to 37% in 2008.
