Europe's largest parent stock (PS) hatchery opened in Hilbersdorf, near Dresden, Germany, in early February.

Europe's largest parent stock (PS) hatchery opened in Hilbersdorf, near Dresden, Germany, in early February.

The new facility will be a vital link in Aviagen's global supply chain and will provide an estimated 1 million PS chicks per month, predominantly to customers in Eastern and Western Europe.

CEO Aviagen Broiler Breeding Randall Ennis commented: "The decision to locate the hatchery in this area was not taken lightly. In fact, the planning process for the ultimate decision took three years. We needed a facility that could satisfy the logistics of European supply and meet our strict biosecurity requirements."

The official opening was attended by Aviagen's senior management team and local dignitaries. Aviagen's president of European Operations Brian Whittle joined Saxony's Minister of Environment and Agriculture Frank Kupfer in the official ribbon cutting ceremony, after which attendees were given a site tour to see its state of the art equipment.

"Equipped with the most modern hatchery technology and with the highest biosecurity and hygiene conditions, customers will receive first-class breeding stock from the Hilbersdorf hatchery," said Mr Whittle.
