Latvian poultry numbers down at end of 2008

The number of poultry in Latvia at the end of 2008 was 4.62 million, as compared with 4.76 million at the end of 2007, according to Latvijas Statistika, the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

Poultry meat production in Latvia in 2008 totaled 23,100 tons, as compared with 20,600 tons in 2007. Figures for 2008 are provisional.

Egg production in Latvia in 2008 totaled 602 million, against 630 million the previous year. The reported average number of eggs produced per laying hen last year was 270, a 1.1% increase as compared with 2007. The average price of eggs increased from LVL$4.41 (USD$8.45) per 100 in 2007 to LVL$5.17 (USD$9.91) per 100 in 2008.
