A poultry house and nearly 19,000 chickens were lost in a fire on September 2 at a farm near Willards, Maryland. Losses have been estimated at $320,000, but no one was injured in the fire.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although it is suspected that the blaze could have started as a result of an electrical malfunction.
Crews from fire departments in both Maryland and Delaware were on the scene for several hours, battling the fire and preventing it from spreading to another chicken house on the property, as well as other nearby areas.
Corey Mitchell, assistant fire chief for Maryland’s Powellville Fire Department, said a limited water supply made battling the blaze more challenging, but firefighters had the use of tankers at each end of the burning building.
