In early June, MSD Animal Health (known as Merck Animal Health in the USA and Canada) continued its commitment to supporting the Asian poultry industry when it hosted more than 180 participants and speakers at two High Quality Poultry Congresses in Phuket, Thailand and Qingdao, China.
During the multiple sessions of the congress, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about challenges and opportunities impacting the profitability of poultry production business. Experts discussed the evolution of poultry genetics and the need to continue broiler breeding in a sustainable way.
The region is also facing new challenges with, the emergence of respiratory pathogens entering farms, especially Newcastle Disease Virus genotype VII. To support this, a portion of the meeting focused on the importance of maintaining a high level of biosecurity on farms to keep these unwanted pathogens from entering farms. Participants were also presented options for infectious bronchitis (IB) vaccines to better control the virus variants, including a spray technique which helps ensure excellent protection.
Attendees also learned about the company’s Convenience Program, developed to help producers maintain a healthy flock and better understand how early protection can result in a stronger business. Expert discussed the direct correlation between the quality of life, such as temperature, water and transportation, and the health of the chicks, leading to the potential to increase the profitability of the business. This begins with strong breeder health, including a well-established vaccination program. MSD Animal Health experts showcased how implementing the Convenience Program can assist producers in maintaining healthy breeders while another offering from MSD Animal Health - the 360 Program, can identify areas of improvement, leading to better operations. Equally important to maintaining healthy flocks, the judicious use of antibiotics was discussed to ensure effectiveness is maintained for when treatment is necessary.
