Egg producers from the United States and Mexico will work together to expand commodity trade between the two countries, after U.S. egg industry representatives completed a first-ever trade mission in the Latin American country.

On August 31, the American Egg Board (AEB) announced a first-time trade mission to Mexico focused on eggs and egg products yielded positive results.

“I’m thrilled with the market understandings and relationships established during our recent … trade mission to Mexico,” AEB President and CEO Anne Alonzo said in a press release. “Clearly, we share many of the same goals and have the powerful potential to reach even more people with the incredible health benefits of eggs in North America.”

Mission takes industry leaders to different segments of egg supply chain

The August 22-25 visit included representatives from the AEB, a checkoff funded organization charged with promoting egg consumption, the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council and U.S. based egg producers. The U.S. delegation met with Mexican industry leaders, U.S. Embassy and Consulate officials as well as representatives of users and producers of eggs like Grupo Bimbo, the world’s largest bakery company, and Proteína Animal (PROAN), Mexico’s largest fresh egg producer and the second largest egg company in the world.

Bimbo, which has operations in Mexico, United States, Canada, Latin America, China and the U.K., is committed to using only cage-free eggs by 2025. Mexican, and Latin American, egg producers will be challenged to provide cage-free eggs. In February, a PROAN representative expressed his concerns about cage-free egg production in Mexico to Industria Avícola.

The delegation also visited Mexipan: International Fair for the Bread Industry, in Mexico City which focused on the global bakery, confectionery, chocolate and ice cream industries.

In the news release, Alonzo said the U.S. egg industry is looking forward to, and focusing on, increasing egg consumption and exports in Mexico and the region. The mission illustrates how both countries egg industries are moving forward to promote eggs and egg products.

Both the U.S. and Mexico are committed to growing egg consumption and commodity trade. Mexico is one of the world’s largest per capita egg consumers. The U.S. is world’s second-largest egg producer, Mexico is the fifth-largest.
