One U.S. state has a new confirmed report of aflatoxin in corn, and one Canadian province has a new confirmed report of deoxynivalenol (DON) in barley, according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report on September 6.

Corn

Aflatoxin greater than 20 parts per billion was confirmed in new crop corn in Kansas this week. This is in addition to Neogen’s previously reported list:

  • Texas
  • Georgia
  • Oklahoma
  • Alabama
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina

Fumonisin has previously been reported in corn in Texas and Oklahoma.

Corn conditions are unchanged from the previous week, with 75 percent in good to excellent condition and 7 percent in poor to very poor condition. Nine percent of corn is at mature stage – two points behind the five-year average.

Barley

A new confirmed report of DON came from Manitoba, Canada, at 4 parts per million. That is in addition to reports from Montana, Delaware and Maryland.

The barley harvest is 86 percent complete, which is 19 points above five-year average.

Wheat

Spring wheat harvest is 81 percent complete, which is 19 points ahead of the five-year average. Sixty-eight percent of the crop is in good to excellent condition, and 8 percent is in poor to very poor condition.

Neogen says this growing season is maturing toward harvest earlier than most years and, with a bumper crop this year, grain elevators are using more temporary storage. This means quality management will be key to marketing grain this year.

There have been no new reports of mycotoxins in corn this week. Neogen previously reported DON in wheat in the following states:

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Kansas
  • Missouri
