Russian pork production up 7% in first quarter

Russia increased its pork production by 43,000 metric tons, or by 7%, in the first quarter of this year as compared with the same period in 2008, according to the Interfax news agency.

Russia's Agriculture Minister, Yelena Skrynni, told a meeting on meat production in Rostov in early April that the share held by imports in total pork consumption in Russia was 27%. She called for a lowering of this figure. By 2010, pork production in Russia is expected to increase to an annual 3.2 million metric tons, 25% more than in 2007.
