Poultry breeding enterprise in Myanmar planned

A new hatchery and poultry breeding farm is scheduled for construction in Myanmar as a joint venture between Belgabroed, a leading producer of day-old chicks in Belgium, and Netherlands-based feed company, De Heus Animal Nutrition.

A new hatchery and poultry breeding farm is scheduled for construction in Myanmar as a joint venture between Belgabroed, a leading producer of day-old chicks in Belgium, and Netherlands-based feed company, De Heus Animal Nutrition.

According to Deal Street Asia, the project aims to meet Myanmar’s growing demand for chicken and eggs, and to support local farmers build expertise in poultry farming.

Named Bel Ga Myanmar, the new enterprise is 99.9 percent owned by BDH Azier B.V, a private joint venture between Belgabroed and De Heus Animal Nutrition. De Heus Myanmar Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of De Heus, is to hold the remaining 0.1 percent stake.

With an estimated total cost of US$10.5 million, the capacity of the new facility is planned for  96,000 hens and 12 million day-old chicks. The company is currently looking for a suitable site near to the country’s largest city, Yangon. The project has received finance from the International Finance Corporation – part of the World Bank – to the tune of USD6.5 million.

Belgabroed is owned by three Belgian families, Destrooper (63.54 percent), Moonen (21.18 percent) and Vervaeke (15.28 percent), reports Deal Street Asia.

Royal De Heus was founded in 1911 and has its roots in the Netherlands. In the meantime, it has expanded from a regional feed company to a feed conglomerate with activities in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. This rapid growth has helped push the De Heus Group into the top 15 of global feed suppliers, according to the company’s web site.

In April, De Heus opened its seventh feed mill in Vietnam, and in July, it agreed to acquire Coops Mengvoeders in order to reinforce its position in the east of the Netherlands.
