Mycotoxins, disease reported in US corn, wheat crops

There are new reports of aflatoxin in corn and deoxynivalenol (DON) in wheat in the U.S., according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report on September 19. Diplodia ear rot also has been reported in corn in Michigan and Ohio.

There are new reports of aflatoxin in corn and deoxynivalenol (DON) in wheat in the U.S., according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report on September 19. Diplodia ear rot also has been reported in corn in Michigan and Ohio.

Corn

Aflatoxin has been reported in new crop corn in Louisiana. This is in addition to previous reports from:

  • Texas
  • Nebraska
  • Oklahoma
  • Georgia
  • North Carolina
  • Kansas
  • Alabama

Five percent of the U.S. corn crop has been harvested, which is two points behind the five-year average.

Wheat

DON was reported in wheat in Manitoba, Canada. This is in addition to previous reports from:

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Georgia
  • North Carolina
  • Kansas
  • Missouri
  • Saskatchewan, Canada

The wheat harvest is 94 percent complete, which is eight points ahead of the five-year average.

Diplodia ear rot

Neogen says this year’s warm and wet weather has caused diplodia ear rot in up to 10 percent of the corn crop in Michigan and Ohio. The disease is identified by fluffy white mold between the kernels. It can cause major storage problems if the affected corn is not dried and conditioned properly, and may decrease test weight and kernel size, which affect feed quality and yield.

When conditions for the diplodia ear rot occur, added pressure may come from insect damage, leading to the potential for mycotoxin growth.
