Certified organic poultry production, sales up in 2015

Organic broiler production in the United States rose significantly during 2015, according to the USDA Certified Organic report, released on September 15.

Organic broiler production in the United States rose significantly during 2015, according to the USDA Certified Organic report, released on September 15.

According to the report, there were 187 broiler farms in the United States during 2015, and production of organic broilers was valued at $420.3 million. In an interview with USDA Radio News, Scott Shimmin, USDA National agricultural Statistics Service, said that sales amount accounts for a 13 percent increase when compared the organic broiler sales reported during 2014.

Leading organic broiler producing states

Pennsylvania and Maine were tied for the most certified organic broiler farms with 23 each, although Pennsylvania accounted for much more in terms of sales, generating $110.6 million compared to Maine’s $382,982.

California, with 16 certified broiler farms, accounted for the largest amount in terms of sales, with $213.1 million.

Other states with ten or more certified organic broiler farms are Iowa (14), Michigan (11), Vermont (13), Virginia (10), and Washington (11).

Organic turkey

There are 74 certified organic turkey farms in the United States, which accounted for more than $70 million in sales.

While fewer states had certified organic turkey farms, many of the leading broiler producing states were also top organic turkey producers.

Pennsylvania had the largest number of farms at 13, and was the second leading state in terms of sales at $17.1 million. California, with six certified organic turkey farms, was the leading state for sales, being responsible for $48.8 million in sales.

Minnesota, the largest overall turkey producing state, was also a leader for organic turkey production, with 10 certified organic farms that raised turkeys to account for about $3 million in sales.
