New reports of DON, FUM in US corn crop

New reports of deoxynivalenol (DON) and fumonisin (FUM) in corn have been confirmed in two U.S. states, according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report from October 10.

New reports of deoxynivalenol (DON) and fumonisin (FUM) in corn have been confirmed in two U.S. states, according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report from October 10.

The new confirmed report of DON in corn came from Michigan. This is in addition to previous reports from:

  • Illinois
  • Indiana

The new confirmed report of FUM in corn came from Missouri. This is in addition to previous reports from:

  • Texas
  • Illinois
  • Oklahoma

Previous reports of aflatoxin in corn have come from:

  • Louisiana
  • Kansas
  • Alabama
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Texas
  • Oklahoma

Eighty-six percent of corn is at the mature stage, which is seven points ahead of the five-year average. Twenty-four percent of corn has been harvested, four points behind the five-year average.

Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota are the most behind the five-year average for harvest. Kentucky and Tennessee are well ahead of the five-year average.

Seventy-three percent of corn in in good to excellent condition, a one-point drop from last week. Eight percent of corn is in poor to very poor condition, a one-point increase from last week.

States with the highest poor to very poor ratings are:

  • Ohio (22 percent)
  • Pennsylvania (21 percent)
  • South Dakota (13 percent)
  • Texas (13 percent)
  • North Carolina (10 percent)
