The fall in the number of pigs for slaughter was small for Italy, and any downturn in slaughterings of Italian reared pigs will not be marked, unlike in most other major producing EU countries.

The fall in total pig numbers only amounted to 1 percent compared with June 2007, and the herd size was unchanged compared with December 2007. The contraction in the sow herd in June 2008 only amounted to 2 percent compared with June 2007, and sow numbers were only 1 percent lower than in December 2007.
