The U.S. poultry industry continues to grow, as 33 companies announced expansion projects during the first 10 months of 2016.
Broiler, turkey and egg companies, as well as poultry genetics companies, have all revealed plans to expand their operations. The expansions include new construction projects, facility upgrades and renovations and acquisitions of existing facilities. Some come in the form of processing plants, while other growth projects include office space, hatcheries, feed mills and the addition of contract farms.
Companies to reveal plans for new projects so far in 2016 include:
Aviagen – Construction of new feed operation
Cargill – Expansion of egg processing facility; planned construction of new headquarters for North American Protein division
Central Valley Eggs – Construction of cage-free egg production facility
Tyson Foods – Planned expansion of cooked poultry facility; Construction of new incubation center; construction of new cooked poultry plant
Holly Poultry – Construction of further processing poultry plant
Rose Acre Farms – Construction of new corporate office
Allen Harim Foods – Renovation to poultry plant to accommodate consolidated operations; planned construction of hatchery
Hillandale Farms – Construction of cage-free egg barns
Pilgrim’s – Expansion at prepared foods plant and enhancement of existing lines; transitioning of another plant to an ‘improved mix of value-added products; proposed construction of new feed mill
Perdue Farms – Planned construction of soybean crush facility; expansion of poultry processing plant; opening of employee training center
Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch – Proposed feed mill and depot building; proposed construction of layer barns
Rembrandt Foods – Planned construction of cage-free egg production site
Foster Farms – Planned construction of organic feed mill
Bell & Evans – Construction of new hatchery
Vital Farms – Planned addition of egg grading facility
Cobb-Vantress – Planned construction of new feed mill
Mountaire Farms – Purchase and planned renovation of closed poultry plant
Sperry Farms – Egg complex expansion that includes a new layer house, a breeding facility and processing and packing facility
Butterball – Addition of new contract turkey farms
Wayne Farms – Addition of cold storage space to poultry complex
The Country Hen – Addition of three barns to increase organic egg production
Miller Poultry – Establishment of a breeder operation and addition of second shift at poultry plant
Koch Foods – Addition of another production line at poultry plant
Simply Essentials – Planned purchase and reopening of closed poultry plant
Simmons Foods – Leasing of storage space
OK Foods – Acquisition of fully-cooked poultry plant
Balady Farm – Conversion of existing building into a halal poultry processing plant
Valley of the Moon – Acquisition of turkey genetics operation
Handsome Brook Farm – Addition of new pasture-raised egg operation
Moyer’s Chicks – Construction of new hatchery
House of Raeford Farms – Construction of new hatchery
J.S. West – Increasing cage-free capacity, conversion of cage houses to cage-free houses
Lincoln Premium Poultry – Proposed construction of new poultry processing plant
Some growth projects are being done in response to the nationwide movement to produce more cage-free eggs, while others are being done to accommodate the increased demand for other niche markets such as antibiotic-free, organic or halal poultry.
