Recent pig census results indicate the extent of the pig crisis in both Poland and Hungary, with further falls inevitable given the sharp decline in gilt numbers in August 2008.

The previous contraction in the two countries’ pig herds has already resulted in sharp falls in pig slaughterings so far in 2008 compared with a year earlier. In the first half of the year, pig slaughterings in Poland were 9% lower than a year earlier and there was an 8% reduction in output in Hungary.
