Sam Houston State University’s Department of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering Technology recently received a $2,300 student recruiting grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation. The grant was made possible by an endowing Foundation gift from Jerry Moye, president of Cobb-Vantress, and his wife, Cherie.

“This $2,300 will be a great contribution to our student recruitment and retention efforts at Sam Houston State University,” said Stanley Kelley, Ph.D., chair and professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering Technology. Sam Houston State University is one of the largest non-land-grant agriculture and industrial technology programs in the United States with 28 faculty members and 1,100 students.

The funds will be used for recruiting events, student field days, industry tours, educational seminars and career fairs for the students. In addition to increasing visibility in recruiting, the funds will also be used to support ExCEL@SAM, a campus visitation day sponsored by the department to engage sophomores, juniors and seniors in laboratory and classroom activities relative to various careers in agriculture.

This year the USPOULTRY Foundation board approved student recruiting grants totaling $291,000 to 32 colleges and universities across the United States with a poultry science department or industry related degree program. The Harold E. Ford Foundation provides annual recruiting funds to colleges and universities to attract students to their poultry programs. The grants are made possible by gifts to the foundation from companies, individuals and families.
