Bulacan has become the first province in the Philippines to implement the government’s US$653,000 program for mass vaccination of pigs on backyard units against the disease Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). Completed in about two weeks, the province’s vaccination campaign covered 89,000 pigs. At national level, the government’s Department of Agriculture has begun measures to help pig producers, including a feed subsidy program which is hoped to add 10-15 kilograms to the average market weight of pigs from backyard sites.
