Tyson Foods believes chicken can gain a larger share of the ground poultry market, and to back up that belief, it plans to introduce a ground chicken product in June.

Speaking during the Consumer Analyst Group of New York (CAGNY) conference on February 21, Sally Grimes, Tyson Foods chief global growth officer, spoke of the demand for ground poultry as an alternative to ground beef.

However, currently, chicken holds a small share of the ground poultry market.

“Fresh ground poultry is a large and growing category, yet nearly 86 percent of it is ground turkey, even though consumers prefer chicken for its versatility and taste benefits,” Grimes said.

Tyson saw an opportunity not only for chicken, but also for the company.

“This is proof that innovation does not need to be that complicated. We will be entering this category with the launch of Tyson ground chicken in June. It’s lean, it’s all natural with no antibiotics ever, and our culinary team is creating all kinds of inspiring recipes to share with consumers.”

Other Tyson Foods product developments announced

During the CAGNY presentation, Grimes also outlined other approaching new product launches that carry not only the Tyson label, but also Ballpark, Hillshire Farms and Jimmy Dean. The products range from breakfast bowls to prime beef franks.

Tyson Foods also used the CAGNY conference as an opportunity to announce that all of the Tyson brand chicken would be raised without antibiotics by June. Tyson Chief Operations Officer Noel White pointed out that chickens that became sick would still be treated, but they would not be processed for retail sale under the Tyson brand.
