Robert Lighthizer was confirmed by an 82-14 vote on Thursday as President Donald Trump’s U.S. Trade Representative (USTR).

Lighthizer previously served as deputy USTR under President Ronald Reagan. He also who played a senior role during Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign and has more recently worked on trade issues as a lawyer, representing manufacturing and agricultural companies.

He has been known for being critical of China’s trade policies, which would coincide with the tough stance on trade with China that Trump has voiced.

Agriculture groups were generally supportive of Lighthizer’s confirmation.

“NTF, along with numerous ag groups, supported Lighthizer’s confirmation, and we look forward to working with him to stress the important role international trade plays in the turkey business,” the National Turkey Federation said in a statement. “Specifically, we will be highlighting the importance of the Mexican and Canadian markets while also expanding trade opportunities and eliminating barriers with other countries.”

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) thanked the Senate for the confirmation vote on Lighthizer.

“USTR is a key player under U.S. law in the development and implementation of U.S. international trade policy and leading our country’s trade negotiations,” AFIA said in a statement. “We welcome Ambassador Lighthizer and look forward to working with him to keep agricultural trade issues a top priority. During his confirmation process, Ambassador Lighthizer highlighted the importance of international trade in our industry and made note that U.S. farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses would be taken into greater account during the renegotiation of NAFTA.

“NAFTA, currently under the limelight, will be at the top of our list as the Trump administration moves forward with its plans to renegotiate the agreement’s terms with Canada and Mexico.”

The North American Meat Institute (NAMI) also issued a statement in support of Lighthizer.

"We welcome today's confirmation of Robert Lighthizer as the next U.S. trade representative," NAMI said. "International trade is vital to the success of the U.S. meat and poultry industry and offers great benefits to the U.S. economy. We look forward to working with Ambassador Lighthizer to expand science-based trade opportunities and to improve market access for meat and poultry products around the world."
