Demolition of the building where Cargill plans to build its new headquarters for its North American Protein business has begun.

The protein business includes Cargill’s turkey operations and the brands Honeysuckle White, Shady Brook Farms and Honest Turkey.

Crews have been seen in early June tearing down the building in Wichita’s Old Town District that for years was the workplace for employees of the Wichita Eagle newspaper. However, because the Eagle’s press operations were consolidated into another building outside of Wichita, the newspaper no longer had the need for such a large building and has since moved to a new location.

Cargill in May 2016 announced that it had outgrown the present Protein division headquarters, also located in Wichita, but wanted to remain in Wichita. Several months later, the company selected the Eagle location as its future home.

The new facility will include about 170,000 square feet of office space to be the workplace for at least 700 people, the Eagle reported. Cargill will also build a 750-space parking garage.

Mike Martin, Cargill spokesman, said demolition of the Eagle building is expected to be completed in August. Cargill hopes to have its new facilities completed and occupied by the end of 2018.

The property is currently owned by local real estate developers involved in the project, but Cargill intends to purchase it from the developers, Martin said.
