Tyson Foods Director of Government Relations Matt Mika has been identified as one of the people injured in the shooting incident at a practice for a Congressional baseball game on June 14 in Alexandria, Virginia. Mika was shot multiple times and was struck in the chest. 

“We have confirmed that Matt Mika, director-government relations for our Washington, D.C. office, is among those who was shot this morning in Alexandria,” Tyson Foods said in a statement issued to The Hill. “He has been taken to a local hospital and we’re awaiting word on his condition. Matt has worked for Tyson Foods for more than six years and we’re deeply concerned about him and his family.”

Mika's family also issued a statement: "While the attack today was a terrible surprise, Matt’s presence on the ball field, helping longtime colleagues and friends, was not. He is a very thoughtful, fun-loving person who is competitive and loyal; all things which contributed to his continued commitment to the Congressional Baseball Game.”

Also injured in the incident was House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana. A message on Scalise’s website confirmed he was shot in the hip and was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he was to undergo surgery. He was reported to be in stable condition. “Prior to entering surgery, the whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone,” the statement read.

A total of five people were reportedly injured.

In a statement, President Donald Trump said: “The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

The suspect has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a resident of Belleville, Illinois. He was reportedly shot by police at the scene and died at a nearby hospital.
