Adding to previously reported aflatoxin and fumonisin, Texas has reported two more mycotoxins in its corn crop, according to Neogen’s Monday Mycotoxin Report from August 21.

Texas has now reported deoxynivalenol (DON) and T-2 toxin in its corn crop. No other states have reported mycotoxins in their corn crop, however, there is a new confirmed report of DON in barley in Pennsylvania. The DON in wheat report remains unchanged from last week.

Corn progress

Corn is 97 percent at or beyond the silking stage, which is one point behind the five-year average. Drought conditions during the silking stage are ideal for aflatoxin development.

Sixty-one percent of the corn crop is at the dough stage, also one point behind the five-year average. Sixteen percent of corn is at the dented stage, four points behind the five-year average.

Iowa corn progress is 10 points behind the five-year average, and Minnesota corn is eight points behind the five-year average.

Twelve percent of corn is in poor to very poor condition, one point below last week, but five points ahead of last year. Sixty-two percent of corn is in good to excellent condition, up two points from last week, but down 12 points from last year.

Wheat and barley

The winter wheat harvest is 97 percent complete, one point ahead of the five-year average. Spring wheat harvest is 40 percent complete, five points ahead of the five-year average.

Forty-two percent of spring wheat is in poor to very poor condition, down one point from last week, but up drastically from 9 percent in 2016. Thirty-three percent of spring wheat is in good to excellent condition, up one point from last week and down from 66 percent in 2016.

Fifty-two percent of barley has been harvested, 12 points ahead of the five-year average.

Twenty-two percent of barley is rated in poor to very poor condition, two points more than last week and up from 5 percent a year ago. Forty-nine percent of barley is in good to excellent condition, up four points from last week, but down from 71 percent a year ago.
