Three states have reported deoxynivalenol (DON) in corn and corn silage, and one state has a new confirmed report of fumonisin in corn, according to Neogen’s Monday Mycotoxin Report from October 16.
DON has been found in corn and corn silage in New York, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. Oklahoma has a new confirmed report of fumonisin in corn.
These reports are added to the previous reports of mycotoxins in corn:
- Tennessee (fumonisin)
- Alabama (fumonisin and aflatoxin)
- Iowa (deoxynivalenol)
- South Dakota (deoxynivalenol)
- Kansas (aflatoxin and fumonisin)
- North Carolina (fumonisin)
- Missouri (fumonisin)
- Oklahoma (aflatoxin)
- Texas (aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin and fumonisin)
“Mycotoxins are impacted most by weather during the growing season,” Neogen said. “However, harvest timing, crop moisture management and storage methods also play a part in toxin growth.”
Corn condition, harvest progress
Corn condition has improved slightly in the past week. Eleven percent of corn is in poor to very poor condition, up one point from last week. Sixty-four percent of corn is in good to excellent condition, also up one point from last week.
Ten states report continue to report corn in double-digit poor to very poor condition:
- South Dakota
- Indiana
- Michigan
- Kansas
- North Dakota
- Nebraska
- Iowa
- Illinois
- Colorado
- Wisconsin
Twenty-two percent of corn has been harvested, 15 points behind the five-year average.
