The Business Association of High Quality Vietnamese Products, GMP+ International and Business Support and Application Services Ltd. Co. (BSAS) have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at improving the management of the animal feed supply chain in Vietnam, reports VietnamPlus.

Food safety remains a concern in Vietnam, according to Nguyen Van Ngoc of the Southeastern Animal Husbandry Association.

Vu Kim Hanh of the Business Association told the news agency that safe meat products start with safe feed, and that the agreement is one of several initiatives in the country aiming to improve standards.

High standards of production that are globally recognized have become a high priority in the Vietnamese pork industry.

Increased output, combined with stable domestic consumption, has led to a recent oversupply of pig meat on the local market, according to VietNamNet Bridge.

In order to be able to export to potentially lucrative markets such as South Korea, Vietnam must be able to demonstrate the quality and safety of its products, said Lee Jong Beom of Daewon JSC.

The first Vietnamese pig farm to achieve globally recognized certification from GlobalG.A.P. is Anova Farm, a subsidiary of the Nova Group.

According to its web site, GMP+ was founded in 1992 to provide a reliable, practical and comprehensive feed certification scheme that is based on good manufacturing practices, and recognized internationally. As of February 2017, the organization has more than 16,000 participants in more than 70 countries, including 17 in Vietnam.

Founded in 1997, GlobalG.A.P. says it is the world’s leading farm assurance program, translating consumer requirements into good agricultural practice in more than 120 countries. The organization has recently held its first training program in Vietnam for livestock farm assurers.
