Research shows limited effectiveness for two darkling beetle control products

USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation announce the completion of a funded research project at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., in which researchers show limited effectiveness for two darkling beetle control products. The research was made possible in part by an endowing Foundation gift from CCF Brands and is part of the Association’s extensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing. Dr. Nancy Hinkle and Dr. Brian Fairchild, from the University of Georgia, recently completed a research project in which they evaluated two products for the control of darkling beetles. The products they evaluated were diatomaceous earth and a fungus, which is pathogenic for insects, Beauveria bassiana. They found that neither product was highly effective against either the larval or adult stages of the darkling beetle. Likewise, when used together the effectiveness of the two products was not significantly enhanced.
