Contract worker injured at Cargill turkey plant

A worker received minor injuries on January 25 at a Cargill turkey processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas.

A worker received minor injuries on January 25 at a Cargill turkey processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas.

According to an emailed statement from Mike Martin, Cargill Protein director of communications, the accident occurred during the third shift at the plant. The accident involved an employee of a third-party contractor that does sanitation work there.

“Somehow, his jacket got caught in a piece of machinery that has rollers and one of his arms was pulled into the machine,” Martin stated.

Workers at the plant called 911 and began extricating him from the machine. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was evaluated and released. According to Martin, the man only suffered scrapes and bruises, and no bones were broken.

“We are investigating the circumstances to determine how this happened and what actions need to be taken to ensure it does not recur,” Martin said. “Safety of people who work at our facilities is a top priority at Cargill and we are relieved that this person’s injuries were minor.”

Cargill is the third largest turkey processor in the United States, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database. The company slaughtered 1 billion pounds of live turkeys in 2016. Its turkey products are manufactured under the Products are marketed under the Honeysuckle White, Shady Brook Farms, Honest Turkey, Charter Reserve and Castlewood Reserve brands.
