The largest poultry meat company in the United Kingdom, 2 Sisters Food Group, is planning to create new jobs at five of its poultry sites, and to close production at three other locations.

Around 1,000 jobs are to be created by 2 Sisters Food Group at its poultry plants in Willand, West Bromwich, and Scunthorpe in England, Coupar in Scotland, and Llangefni in Wales.

“As we continue to build a better business, we are simplifying how we work and investing in the areas that can make the most positive difference to our U.K. poultry operations,” said a spokesperson for the company. “This means that we will be creating up to 1,000 new roles within the poultry supply chain.”

The firm is currently consulting with the workforce on the possible closure of three production sites — Cambuslang in Scotland, and Smethwick and Wolverhampton in England.

“However, we do have areas of significant challenge and regrettably 900 roles will be at risk at three sites loss-making sites, which we propose to close,” according to a company statement. “Our focus now will be to support all affected colleagues and explore all alternative options available to us before making any final decisions.”

At the end of January, the firm announced it was increasing production at its cooked chicken plant in the English city of Derby.

At the center of alleged food safety breaches in 2017, 2 Sisters announced recently it will provide greater transparency in the food chain in future by publishing the results of all audit and inspections of its poultry processing plants.

With an annual production of 317 million chickens and six million turkeys, 2 Sisters Food Group stands at number 7 in the top poultry meat companies in Europe, according to the latest WattAgNet rankings.

According to the firm’s web site, 2 Sisters Food Group was founded by Ranjit Singh in 1993. Under the holding company, Boparan Holdings and its CEO, Singh, 2 Sisters processes six million birds each week, and produces around one-third of the poultry meat products eaten every day in the U.K. The company also has businesses covering red meat, chilled and frozen foods, cookies and pizza.
