An outbreak of Newcastle disease was confirmed in a backyard poultry flock in Lanarca on the island of Cyprus.

The Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment recently reported the case to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), in which the disease was found in a backyard flock of 30 chickens.

According to the OIE report, there were 10 laying hens on the property and 20 broiler chickens that were about 3 weeks old. Of the 30 chickens there, 16 died after contracting Newcastle disease, while the other 14 birds were destroyed and buried.

Testing was done at a national animal health laboratory, and those tests came back positive on March 13.

The source of the infection has not yet been determined.

According to the OIE, the last time there was a confirmed case of Newcastle disease in Cyprus was in November 2013.

OIE considers the case to be resolved and it will not submit any more reports on the matter.

Within recent months, there have also been cases of Newcastle disease reported in Switzerland, Bulgaria and Sweden.
