10 top poultry-producing countries competing for World Cup

This ten countries are not only good at soccer, but at poultry production. Meet the impressive numbers of each country.

Mexico, Japan, Russia, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, France, Germany, Brazil and England are 10 of the 32 national teams classified to the 2018 FIFA World Cup that registered the highest levels of production and consumption of chicken and egg in the planet. This interesting ranking was prepared by Avicultores, the official magazine of the National Federation of Poultry Farmers from Colombia (Fenavi, in Spanish). 

According to the publication, this dozen countries are responsible for a large part of the world’s production of these foods of avian origin: 91.3 million tons of chicken and 1.360 trillion of eggs each year approximately. 

Poultry figures by country

Mexico produces 43.75 billion eggs per year, with 130 million layers. It also produces 3.51 million tons of chicken meat, while imports 662,000 tons. In terms of per capita consumption, Mexicans eat 355 eggs and 23.1 kg of chicken meat per year per person. 

Japan is the fourth world producer of eggs, with a production of 39.063 billion eggs per year. In terms of chicken production, it generates 1.4 million tons. The per capita consumption in this Asian country is 334 eggs and 21.1 kg of chicken meat. 

Russia, host country of the World Cup, is also a large poultry producer and exporter, with a production of 39 billion eggs and 4.8 million tons of chicken meat. In terms of per capita consumption, Russians eat 285 eggs and 33.7 kg of chicken per year. 

The fourth Latin American poultry power, Colombia, registers 13.827 billion eggs and 1.5 million tons of chicken, with a per capita consumption of 279 eggs and 32.8 kg of chicken. 

Meanwhile, Argentina has similar figures to those of Colombia, with the plus of being exporters: they produce 12.394 billion eggs (with a per capita consumption of 272 eggs) and 2.07 million tons of chicken (with a per capita consumption of 44 kg).

Spain, a favorite country to win the World Cup once again, produces 17.188 billion eggs and 1.2 million tons of chicken, with a per capita consumption of 254 eggs and 26.6 kg of chicken. 

France produces 14.4 billion eggs and 1.8 million tons of chicken, with a per capita consumption of 248 eggs and 26 kg of chicken.

In the other hand, the Germans produce 13.69 billion eggs and 1.54 million tons of chicken (per capita consumption of 231 eggs and 19.4 kg of chicken. 

Like other European countries, England is a major exporter within that continent, with a production of 9.313 billion eggs and 1.4 million tons of chicken (per capita consumption of 188 eggs and 24.3 kg of chicken).

Finally, the eternal candidate and largest world exporter of animal protein, Brazil, produces 39 billion eggs and 13 million tons of chicken, with a per capita consumption of 192 eggs and 42 kg of chicken. With these impressive Brazilian figures, we must keep in mind that they export each year 4.3 million tons of chicken and 5,834 tons of eggs.
