Cattle, poultry numbers rise in Switzerland

Farm count and number of agricultural workers decline.

Statistics released by the Federal Statistics Office, Switzerland, reported the number of cattle rose by about 19,000, while the number of poultry attained a record high of 8.5 million from 2007 to 2008, according to a news report.

The same report showed there were 60,894 farms in the country in 2008, down from 2007 by approximately 870 or 1.4%.

The average farm size increased, although the total area used for farming declined. The number of people employed in the agriculture sector also fell. According to the report, farming currently employs about 169,000 people in Switzerland.
