Rembrandt Foods, an Iowa-based egg producer and processor, has notified employees that its Abbeville, Alabama, facility will cease production by the end of January 2019.

“We value all of our employees and the decision to close the Abbeville facility has been a difficult one,” said Kyle Heberle, president of Rembrandt Foods.

All of the location's current full-time employees will be offered new job opportunities at other Rembrandt facilities along with relocation benefits. Severance packages are available for those that chose not to stay with Rembrandt.

The company made the announcement now to give employees ample time to decide what is best for their families, explained Phil Kassel, vice president of human resources.

The closure of Abbeville was needed to improve operations and support the needs of customers due to investment needed to update the current equipment. Rembrandt continually assesses needs to achieve its goals and serve customers with its products and service.

“The plant is nearly 50 years old and the equipment is aging. To ensure an efficient business operation, Rembrandt is focusing resources where we can drive long-term growth,” said communications liaison, Joe Shannahan.

Production will be shifted to other Rembrandt facilities in the Midwest.

“The company’s plan for the current building has not been determined and Rembrandt is evaluating all potential options,” Shannahan said.

Rembrandt hopes to continue to efficiently serve customers. “Egg products industry is strong and growing, and Rembrandt is positioned to continue to serve customers as a leader in the industry. We are shifting production and volume to other locations,” Shannahan concluded.
