Pinty’s Delicious Foods has recalled chicken products from the marketplace, citing possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The recall was announced August 9 by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
According to the CFIA, the following product been subject to recall: Pinty’s Oven Roasted Chicken Breast Strips. The product came in 1-kilogram packages and includes the UPC code 0 69094 62401 1. The affected products either have a best before date of August 9 or August 15.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products, which were distributed at the retail level in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. However, CFIA stated that the recall was triggered by test results from the agency. CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
Pinty’s Delicious Foods is headquartered in Burlington, Ontario, and operates three poultry processing plants – all of which are located in Ontario.
In June, it was announced that an agreement had been reached in which Olymel would acquire all of the shares of Pinty’s Delicious Foods, pending the approval of the Competition Bureau. Olymel owns seven poultry slaughtering and processing establishments in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick serving the entirety of the Canadian market under the brands Olymel, Flamingo and Galco, in addition to placing its production capacity at the service of private brands.
