Allen Harim Foods is asking for changes to the conditions of a special use exception granted from the Board of Adjustment in Millsboro, Delaware.

The company’s special use exception was granted as the company intends to create a deboning facility in the same building that houses its new corporate headquarters.

The poultry company is requesting one of two conditions the Board of Adjustment issued with its May approval, reported WBOC. The condition states that the spray irrigation system to be used as part of the proposed use must be upgraded, approved, permitted, and operational before the facility is operational.

However, a spokesperson for Allen Harim finds that condition too restrictive, and says the facility may not produce enough wastewater for spray irrigation to be necessary.

When Allen Harim in December 2017 announced its plans to convert the Millsboro property, which was formerly a Vlasic pickle plant, to its corporate headquarters and a deboning plant, it stated that the deboning process uses just a fraction of the water used in a traditional poultry slaughter plant, and that the company was committed to upgrading the wastewater treatment process to provide a wastewater solution that is environmentally friendly.

In its decision, the Board of Adjustment found that Allen Harim would provide any necessary safeguards for the area with the new facility.

The proposed deboning operation will be located in about 50,000 square feet of the facility, where chicken that has already been processed at its Harbeson, Delaware, processing plant will be deboned and repackaged for customers. That deboning work had previously been done in an out-of-state facility.

Allen Harim dedicated the new corporate headquarters just a few weeks ago.
