Sofina Foods is recalling some of its Janes brand frozen uncooked breaded chicken products due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The products subject to recall, which was announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on October 26, were Pub Style Chicken Burgers – Uncooked Breaded Chicken Burgers. The recalled products came in 800 gram packages that contained the code 2019 MA 14 on the outer package and the code 1348 in the inner package. The products also carried the UPC code: 0 69299 12491 0.

The Sofina Foods products in question were distributed throughout Canada at the retail level.

This recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated food recall warnings.

People who may have consumed the products are being urged by CFIA to return them to the store from which they were purchased, or to dispose of them. The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.

This recall follows a similar one involving Sofina Foods products with a potential link to a Salmonella outbreak that occurred in 2017. In that case, Sonia’s Janes brand Pub Style Chicken Burgers were recalled, as well as Janes Pub Style Snacks Popcorn Chicken products. In regards to that recall, CFIA and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) announced in late September. At the time, the agencies reported that 13 people had become ill as a result of consuming frozen raw breaded chicken products. Seven of those people were from Ontario, while two people each from Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia became ill.

Sofina Foods’ key brands, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, include Janes, Cuddy Food Products and Lilydale. The company’s product offerings include both chicken and turkey.
