Bidco Land O'Lakes, the joint venture between Bidco Africa and the U.S. company Land O’ Lakes, created a four-phase feed that is designed to reduce the maturity period and increase production for Kienyeji chickens.

According to a Business Daily report, “The feeds include Kienyeji Chick Mash, Kienyeji Growers Mash, Kienyeji Finisher Mash, and Kienyeji Layers Mash, each aimed at different stages of indigenous chicken development.”

Bidco Land O’Lakes CEO Herman Githinji explained in the report that he was confident that the product will fill a vital gap in rearing of indigenous chicken in Kenya.

The new feed

The new Bidco Land O’ Lakes product will use ingredients that are locally sourced and natural in order to make the indigenous chicken maintain its taste, egg or meat color and texture.

The product is intended for indigenous chicken, which makes up for a big proportion of chicken consumed locally.

“The most recent poultry census in Kenya placed the number of chickens at 45 million. Out of this 34 million or 75 percent are indigenous chicken,” Githinji said in the Business Daily report.

Bidco Land O'Lakes

In 2016, Land O’Lakes Inc. expanded its commercial footprint in Africa and China, through a partnership with Bidco Africa to create Bidco Land O’Lakes Ltd., a new joint venture that helps farmers in East Africa improve animal nutrition, and entered into an agreement with the intent to form a seed distribution joint venture in China.

According to the WATTAgNet Top Feed Companies Database, Land O’Lakes is the second-largest American farm cooperative. U.S.-based Purina Animal Nutrition, its wholly owned subsidiary, constitutes the core of Land O’Lakes’ animal nutrition division. Land O'Lakes also owns Mazuri, which produces animal feed for zoo keepers, veterinarians, breeders and exotic pet owners. Land O’Lakes does business in all 50 American states, and upwards of 50 countries.
