Sofina Foods is recalling its Crisp & Delicious brand uncooked season breaded chicken cutlettes from the marketplace, due to possible Salmonella contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced.

The affected products come in 1.6 kilogram packages, and contain the product code 2019 JL 19 and UPC code 0 69299 11703 5.

The recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

The products in question are known to have been distributed in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec, but were possibly distributed nationwide, according to the CFIA.

The products are being recalled as the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is investigating an outbreak of human illness.

According to PHAC, there is one active national Salmonella outbreak investigation linked to raw chicken, including raw breaded chicken products. As of January 25, there were 54 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis in ten provinces linked to this outbreak.

Of those Salmonella cases, 20 have been in Ontario, 11 in Alberta, 5 in Nova Scotia, 4 each in British Columbia and Quebec, 3 each in Manitoba and Prince Edward Island, 2 in New Brunswick, and 1 each in Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Laborador.

None of the individuals who became ill were hospitalized, nor were any deaths reported.

Since May 2017, scientists with the government of Canada began using whole genome sequencing technology to help identify and respond to illness outbreaks. Since that time, federal, provincial and territorial health and food safety partners have investigated 15 national outbreaks linked to raw chicken. CFIA has issued food recall warnings for 11 products linked to some of these investigations.

Sofina Foods was involved in several earlier recalls. In October 2017, it recalled some of its Janes brand frozen uncooked breaded chicken products because of possible Salmonella contamination. More Janes brand frozen uncooked breaded chicken products were recalled for the same reason one year later, and that recall was expanded in November 2018.
