Ranking Asian markets on per capita poultry consumption

Malaysia was Asia’s largest chicken consumer of poultry meat on a per capita basis in 2018, as consumers in that country ate nearly three times as much poultry than those in other Asian nations.

Malaysia was Asia’s largest chicken consumer of poultry meat on a per capita basis in 2018, as consumers in that country ate nearly three times as much poultry than those in other Asian nations.

According estimates from the Meat Consumption report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Malaysia’s poultry consumption was 46.7 kilograms per capita. Korea ranked second among Asian markets at 17.4 kilograms per capita, followed closely by Japan at 17.2 kilograms.

The report examined 11 Asian markets, as well as other markets in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania. In addition to offering looks at per capita poultry meat consumption, the report tracked consumption patterns of beef and veal, pork and sheep meat.

Here is how the Asian countries ranked in per capita poultry consumption for 2018:

  3. Japan, 17.2
  4. Kazakhstan, 15.8
  5. Thailand, 14.8
  6. Vietnam, 13.5
  7. Philippines, 12.8
  8. China, 12.2
  9. Indonesia, 7.1
  10. Pakistan, 4.5
  11. India, 2.2

Comparisons to 2017

There were not any changes in rankings for the 11 Asian markets in 2018 when compared to 2017 estimates. However, nearly all of the countries saw an increase in per capita poultry consumption. Only Pakistan was unchanged year-over-year, with an average poultry consumption rate of 4.5 kilograms per capita.

Vietnam saw the largest increase, with an increase of 0.5 kilograms per capita. Japan, Kazakhstan, Thailand and China each saw their per capita poultry consumption rise by 0.3 kilograms.
