In his recent presentation during the annual general meeting of Nordic meat and poultry company HKScan, the company’s CEO, Tero Hemmilä, identified poultry as a key driver for growth.

EU per capita poultry consumption

Citing the EU Agricultural Outlook, Hemmilä pointed out that EU consumers ate 24.1 kilograms per person per year in 2018, up from the per capita consumption of 15.6 kilograms in 1994. That same outlook projected that the per capita poultry consumption number would increase to 24.8 pounds by 2030.

Hemmilä further stated that global meat consumption is estimated to grow by about 1.3 percent annually for the next decade, and that poultry and pork are estimated to make up about 70 percent of the meat consumption growth in the near future, according to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook.

Growth potential for poultry

According to Hemmilä’s presentation, healthiness, ease of use, sustainability and export opportunities are driving the growth of poultry, and in one of HKScan’s key markets, Finland increased its poultry consumption by more than 36 percent from 2010 to 2017.

Hemmilä added that the position and appreciation of HKScan’s brands among consumers offer a foundation for building market leadership.

Rauma poultry unit can help fill demand

HKScan in 2017 opened its new, state-of-the-art poultry processing plant in the Rauma district of Lakari, Finland. Hemmilä says that facility will be key to the company’s growth.

The CEO said “production efficiency and delivery reliability are developing in the right direction,” but improving efficiency still requires work. Investments in new expertise have been made.

The company is also looking at improving yields and productivity, price increases, insourcing of previously outsourced functions, and expanding exports.

Hemmilä was appointed to become the CEO of HKScan in December 2018, returning to the company after having serving HKScan in a variety of roles between 1997 and 2010. He also served on the HKScan board from 2011 to 2016.
