Russia’s Cherkizovo is considering an upgrade of its poultry operations in Vasilyevskaya, the company announced.

According to a press release, Cherkizovo would like to invest in its Vasilyevskaya poultry farm, including replacement of two obsolete slaughter lines running at 8,000 and 6,000 birds per hour with a new modern line handling 13,000 birds per hour. Up to RUB1 billion (US$15 million)may be invested in this project.

The administration could also contribute greatly to the group’s poultry meat exports to China (the Vasilyevskaya farm has already been certificated for supplies to China) as the company was listed among Russian exporters of poultry meat to the Chinese and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) markets.

Cherkizovo CEO Sergey Mikhailove recently met with Ivan Belozertsev, governor of the Penza Region, about the company’s plans.

In 2017, Cherkizovo reported that its Vasilyevskaya poultry production facility has received permission to export poultry products to Iraq.

Possible investment in Tambov Turkey

While Cherkizovo is considering an expansion to its Vasilyevskaya operations, it is also looking at a possible expansion of Tambov Turkey, a joint venture between Cherkizovo and Grupo Fuertes.

According to plans, Cherkizovo would like to increase its turkey capacity by about 50 percent and effectively achieve a 29 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA) increase in live-weight turkey output. The second stage also might include building several more nursery and finisher sites in the region's Pervomaysky District.

The company earlier in 2019 announced that it would invest in an upgrade at its Altaisky Broiler operations, which it acquired in 2018 from rival Russian company Prioskolie.

Cherkizovo, according to the Poultry International Top Poultry Companies survey, slaughtered 312 million broilers in 2017, making it Russia’s largest poultry company. It is also tied with Ukraine’s MHP as the sixth largest poultry company in Europe. Poultry accounts for about 80 percent of the company’s revenues.
