One person was sent to the hospital after an ammonia leak occurred at a Tyson Foods plant in New Holland, Pennsylvania.
The leak was reported in the evening of August 19, and the facility was evacuated, Tyson Foods spokesperson Derek Burleson said.
One worker from the plant was evaluated at a nearby hospital and was released.
The cause of the leak has not been determined, but Burleson said the company is investigating the situation.
“We appreciate the quick response and support of local emergency responders in helping us address the situation,” Burleson said.
Earlier ammonia leak at another Tyson facility
The New Holland incident is one of two ammonia leaks to occur at a Tyson Foods facility in less than one week.
Another leak occurred on the Morning of September 16, at a Tyson Foods plant in Clarksville, Arkansas. As a result of that leak, 18 people were sent to an area hospital to be evaluated “out of an abundance of caution,” and one of those people was admitted. However, that person has since been released.
Regular operations at the Tyson plant in Clarksville have also resumed.
Tyson Foods, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, processed 192.33 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2018. It’s closest rival in the United States is Pilgrim’s Pride, which processed 156.02 million pounds on a weekly basis in 2018. It is also a major producer of turkey, beef, pork and plant-based protein products.
